All About Pre-Prep

At WPPS we have two classes in Grade N (00) for boys who turn five, and two classes in Grade R (0) for boys turning six. Each of our Pre-Prep classes benefits from the invaluable support of a classroom assistant. The boys enjoy their own fun-filled, well-equipped playground, designed to build confidence, develop gross motor skills, and encourage rich social interaction. We place strong emphasis on having fun while learning, in a happy, safe and secure environment. Through creative activities, music, and educational games, we prepare our boys not only for the more formal learning environment of Grade 1, but also for life.

Our focus is on the holistic development of every child. As we prepare our boys for formal learning, we create real, relevant, and developmentally appropriate teaching moments that build strong foundations in emergent mathematical and literacy skills. Creativity, curiosity, independence, and critical thinking are nurtured through a theme-based, integrated curriculum.

A Message from the Head of Pre-Prep

Western Province Pre-Prep offers a supportive, nurturing environment, which fosters a love of learning and school. Whether it be digging in the sandpit, riding a bicycle, or blowing bubbles in the water sensory trays, we believe that children learn best when they are having fun. Our heart is to create structured, intentional play experiences, ensuring that our boys feel safe to engage and explore. Our focus is on the holistic development of each child. As we prepare our boys for formal learning, we are mindful of creating real, relevant and developmentally appropriate teaching moments that prepare our boys with emergent mathematical and literacy skills. Creativity, curiosity, independence and critical thinking abilities are developed through a theme-based, integrated curriculum.

Pre-Prep Curriculum

We believe that children learn best when they are having fun, feeling safe, and engaging with real and relevant experiences. In the Pre-Prep, our theme-based curriculum is carefully designed to nurture creativity, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning.

Our boys are encouraged to explore, discover, and learn in meaningful and developmentally appropriate ways. Through creative, play-based activities and games, they develop emergent literacy and mathematical skills while building confidence, independence, and a genuine love for learning.

At this stage, strong emphasis is placed on developing motor, language, visual, and listening skills, all of which provide a solid foundation for future learning.

We are privileged to have specialist teachers who enrich our programme.

Dedicated lessons in:

  • Music
  • Physical Education
  • isiXhosa
  • Afrikaans

Our boys also enjoy weekly visits to our beautiful Eden Road Library, where stories and books spark imagination and foster a love of reading.

At WPPS, we are deeply committed to offering a supportive and nurturing environment where every child feels valued and inspired. Our curriculum not only prepares boys for the more formal learning journey ahead, but also equips them with the confidence, skills, and joy needed for life.

Aftercare

Our Aftercare programme is available for boys from Grade N to Grade 3 and is designed to provide a nurturing, home-away-from-home environment. After the school day, boys are free to relax, play, and spend time with friends in a safe and supportive space.

Afternoons are filled with opportunities for fun, creativity, and friendship. On sunny days, the boys enjoy plenty of outdoor play; riding bikes, playing games, and exploring our Pre-Prep playground. Indoors, they can choose from a variety of activities such as arts and crafts, construction toys, reading, and imaginative play, all of which keep them engaged and happy.

Aftercare is open every day from 12:30 to 17:00, with the flexibility for boys to attend daily or on an ad hoc basis. Whether painting, building, running outdoors, or simply sharing laughter with friends, this is a happy space where boys are free to play, explore, and feel at home.

Outings

At WPPS, outings are intentionally planned to complement and extend the curriculum. Each experience is designed to build on what the boys are learning in the classroom, making their learning more meaningful and memorable.

In Grade N, we invite specialists to the school to present engaging, age-appropriate shows and experiences that spark curiosity and wonder. In Grade R, the boys enjoy their first outing beyond the school grounds. This is an exciting milestone that broadens their horizons.

These outings are not only fun and enriching but also play an important role in developing social, emotional, and life skills, while creating lasting memories.
